Paul Lewis at the St George's
PAUL LEWIS

Friday 4th April 2008 - 8pm
£15
A protégé of Alfred Brendel, Paul Lewis has been widely acclaimed as one of the great new talents of the century, his award-winning 'Schubert Piano Sonata Series' hailed by the public and critics alike. Lewis brings his extraordinary intellectual rigour and imaginative vigour to Mozart's expressive, unresolved Fantasia and yearning, melancholic Rondo and to Ligeti's compelling works for piano. The International Piano Series ends with what will undoubtedly be a superlative performance of one of Schubert's most elusive and sublime masterpieces, the Sonata D894. (back to top)

Kathryn Williams & Neill MacColl at the St George's
KATHRYN WILLIAMS & NEILL MACCOLL

Sunday 13th April 2008 - 8pm
£16
One of the UK's favourite new-folk performers, Mercury-nominated singer-songwriter Kathryn Williams has perfected the art of the iron fist in the velvet glove, a peculiarly English voice whose volcanic passion, fury and humour are essayed in a glass-clear voice of hushed intimacy. An acclaimed guitarist and intelligent, bittersweet lyricist, Neill MacColl is not only a member of a hugely influential musical clan but also one of the UK's top session musicians, film composers (Fever Pitch, TwentyFourSeven) and music producers. Kathryn and Neill first met at the Daughters of Albion concert (part of the BBC's Folk Britannia season) where they had been paired to perform The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face, a song which Neill's father, folk purist Ewan MacColl, wrote for his mother, Peggy Seeger. The natural affinity which shone through this performance led to them collaborating on one of the most astonishingly beautiful albums ('Two', due for release in spring 2008) to see the light of day in recent years. Characterised by delicate vocals, melodic folk charm and unfettered lyrical acuity, Williams and MacColl bring Bacarach-ian pop colour to fragile, pastoral acoustica. Swooning with lightly picked acoustic guitars, every delicate nuance perfectly executed, their warm, engaging and undemonstrative, yet powerful, live performance in support of this album is one of life's blissful pleasures. Balanescu Quartet at the St George's
BALANESCU QUARTET: FILM & MUSIC
Wednesday 16th April 2008 - 7.30pm
£18
Appearing prominently in Michael Nyman's scoring for Peter Greenaway films, Alexander Balanescu's virtuoso violin is no stranger to the screen, and the Balanescu Quartet has built a strong reputation for its well-integrated multi-media performances. Second Breath is a deeply moving reflection on the life and work of acclaimed London-based sculptor and Bergen-Belsen survivor Maurice Blik, whilst Play is composed for rare unearthed footage of the Ballet Russe in unguarded moments at play on an Australian beach in the 1930s. Both films are produced by Gillian Lacey, with music by Alexander Balanescu. The concert will also include material from the Quartet's repertoire. (back to top)
